5 Time Management Practices that Actually Work

Most of us struggle with managing our time effectively. Here are some time management tips and tricks that actually work.

Time management tips:

Set a time limit for each task you do:

Setting a time limit keeps you on track. Each task will have its own time limit, depending on the size and scope of the project. For example, if you need to draft a presentation, set aside an hour. Whereas half an hour for checking, responding to and sending emails seems appropriate. By setting out a specific time limit on completing a task, you hold yourself much more accountable. You spend less time dawdling because you know you’ve set aside a specific amount of time to complete it. Thus, you end up making much better use of your time.

Write a to-do list for the day and STICK TO IT:

This seems so easy but many people struggle with it. A great way to manage your time is to jot down all your responsibilities and tasks for the day. Having a physical reminder of the things you need to get done will help with productivity as it keeps you accountable. As the day progresses, you can check of all the things you’ve completed. This way, you can see all the tasks you’ve successfully completed. Having a checklist is also a great way to encourage you to work faster and harder. It can be so pleasing ticking of a task!

Avoid multitasking:

Multitasking can be great, but not all the time. Jumping between tasks can confuse your mind, and it means you’re not giving 100% to either. This results in you taking longer to complete tasks, since you keep picking them up and down. You should instead dedicate your time to completing your tasks one at a time. Some activities require more focus. This way, the task gets done much faster, and at a better quality.

Take schedules breaks:

Taking a break might sound counter productive to managing your time effectively, but it works. When you schedule breaks, it gives you something to look forward to. It also forces you to work, knowing that a break is coming up. You are more likely to put more work in and stick to your schedule.

Download scheduling apps:

Ah, technology. There are so many apps designed to make our lives easier. If you’re someone that struggles to schedule your life, stay on track of your work, and get distracted easily, you should turn to apps. There are many scheduling apps that can help keep your day planned. Try out Google Calendar, or Outlook Calendar. Each allows you to set reminders to keep you on track and on schedule. If you struggle with distractions, there are apps like Offtime, Freedom and Flipd which prevent you from using social media for a set amount of time. This minimizes the distractions, forcing you to pay more attention to your work.
